GDUI 2017 Convention First-Timers’ Winners!

We Have Winners!

GDUI Congratulates Sam Hoggle and Karen Wood, Winners of the GDUI 2017 Convention First-Timers’ Awards!

A Message from Caitlin Mongillo, Chair
GDUI First-Timers’ Committee

As you may recall, last summer Bob Acosta and the fabulous fundraising committee held a raffle in Minneapolis. The proceeds of this raffle were earmarked to send a GDUI member to convention for the first time. Bob’s raffle raised over $1900 last year. A committee was established to construct an application, decide how these funds would be utilized and seek qualified candidates to attend our 2017 convention in Sparks, NV. We are glad to say that we have found our two first time scholarship award recipients; Karen Wood of Maryland and Sam Hoggle of Georgia. Karen and Sam, along with their guides, will be flying off to Sparks, NV, this summer to participate in their first GDUI convention.

They will attend all the GDUI events, mingle with members, and learn more about advocating for guide dog users across the country. When they return home, they will each serve on a GDUI committee and use all of their accrued knowledge to assist GDUI members across the globe. We had several qualified candidates, and we thoroughly appreciate everyone who submitted our rather lengthy application. We hope to be able to continue this program in the future, and look forward to meeting Karen and Sam in Nevada in about eight weeks or so.

Thank you to Bob Acosta for his brilliant idea, to last year’s fund raising committee for assisting him, and for the lovely Louisville Ladies who helped to run the raffle in Minneapolis. Also, tremendous heartfelt thanks to the first timers’ committee: Brianna Murray, Minh Ha, Lynn Merrill and Penny Reeder. These ladies worked so hard to make this program possible.

Congratulations to Karen and Sam again. We are so looking forward to meeting you in Reno.

Sincerely,

Caitlin Mongillo, Chair
