Musher’s Secret was first developed for the dogs running the lditarod in Alaska. When used on the pad and up in between them, it prevents snow balling and protects from the icy cold. Many owners use it where ice melter leaves sidewalks and streets with an acid residue that burns the paws. One owner wrote to tell us her vet suggested using it on her puppy’s nose, which was raw from digging in the snow.
While first perceived as a cold weather solution, Musher’s Secret is now sold and used year round. Hikers, hunters, beach goers and anyone who loves including their dogs in outdoor activities loves Musher’s for the conditioning it provides. Healthy, conditioned pads better withstand all surfaces and the vitamin E and bees wax soothe and heal dry, cracked pads that have been damaged by the heat and rough surfaces. Musher’s can be used on pets with allergies to grass, and can help protect paws from the harsh chemicals sprayed on lawns, as the waxes form a breathable, protective layer that keeps toxins from absorbing.
For application, think of Musher’s like hand lotion. Apply and rub in a thin layer on and around the pads, it takes just a minute or two to absorb. Once it has Musher’s will not come off on floors, carpets or clothing. Pet owners who are having those issues are applying too much. It will not come off when the pads are rinsed but does come off with soap and water. We apply on an old rug by the back door and then go out for our walk. Typically Musher’s “walks off” in about a week but the amount and type of exercise may warrant using it 2-3 times at most. Be sure to rub it into your hands after applying to your pet as it is very moisturizing.
Musher’s popularity stems from its all -natural ingredients. Only plant based “food grade” oils and waxes are used in its manufacture. We often get panicked calls from owners whose pets have eaten an entire container and other than loose stools for a day there are no ill effects. Pets can lick their pads with no problem whatsoever. There are NO nut oils, tea tree oil, or added fragrance, all questions we have been asked and forwarded to the manufacturer for confirmation. Musher’s Secret has no expiration because it is a stable wax. It is safe to use on cats and birds, and horse owners use it for the same protection and conditioning that dog owners do.
We have groomers who use it for hot spots and fleabites to soothe and keep debris out of sore areas. Many doggy daycares use it to protect and condition the animals paws when playing on the concrete or mats in the facilities. It has been recommended for use on the wattle of chickens in winter as that area gets chapped. A vet in Sacramento uses it on her chicken patients feet (see our Facebook page for her video).
